Thermal Imaging
Waltham Forest in conjunction with Ascham Homes commissioned
aerial photography specialists Blue Sky International Ltd to
capture property heat loss information from dwellings within the
London Borough of Waltham Forest.
The information was captured by flying an aircraft over Waltham
Forest on the night of 26th February 2008. You can use the site to
access property information on how much heat is being lost from any
dwelling in the borough.
The thermal image can be used widely across a council, enabling
energy conservation officers, architects and general public quick
and accurate analysis and reporting.

As part of the government’s Home Energy Conservation Act 1995,
Local Authorities in the UK must increase domestic energy
efficiency and decrease carbon emissions. Aerial infrared thermal
imaging provides valuable data to analyse areas of thermal imagery
overlaid onto aerial photography for comparison concern for heat
loss activity.
Typically, the aircraft flies at a height of 2,000 feet and
makes a series of overlapping passes over the area to be surveyed.
The aircraft is fitted with satellite navigation equipment to
prevent drifting. Aerial thermography can only be undertaken on a
cold, clear, cloudless night during the winter months and at least
two hours after sunset to minimise the effects of the daytime
sunshine and to ensure that most properties are heated to a
comfortable level.
This aerial survey is a snapshot taken at one moment in time to
show how much heat your dwelling was losing when the aircraft flew
over. The information provided is a guideline to the heat losses
shown by colour scales (see below), but not the definitive guide to
how energy efficient a property is, as the amount of heat a
building loses can be influenced by many factors.
Home Improvements
With some simple energy saving home improvements, you can save
money, improve the comfort of your home and help fight climate
change.
An energy efficient house makes economical sense as it's cheaper
to run and it could be a key selling point if you choose to sell
your house.
