Demoted tenancies
If you have a secure tenancy and you,
someone in your household or any visitors to your home threaten or
cause a nuisance to any person or use the property for illegal
purposes, we can serve notice on you. We can apply to the county court
to change your secure tenancy to a demoted tenancy. If any unacceptable
behaviour continues after a demotion order has been made, we can apply
to the court to repossess your home.
The
demoted tenancy lasts for one year. At the end of the year, if there
have been no further problems, it becomes a secure tenancy again. If
you have been demoted and you receive an eviction notice, you have a
right to ask us to review the decision to evict you. While your tenancy
is demoted you lose certain rights – for example, the right to buy the
property.
