Refunding your improvement costs

At the end of your tenancy, you may be entitled to receive compensation from the council for some authorised improvements that you have made. We will need to see your receipts, so make sure you keep them in a safe place. Relatives may also claim in cases where the tenant has died. However, if you do not get permission from us before carrying out the improvement, you can’t apply for any compensation.

You will also not get compensation for improvements you have made if you are buying your home through the Right to Buy scheme because the extra value created by these improvements is not included in the purchase price.

Some examples of work where you may be entitled to compensation include installing central heating or double-glazing.

Please note that you are responsible for decorating the inside of your home and you cannot receive any compensation for this. If you decide to take any improvements with you when you move home, such as kitchen cupboards, you must return your home to its previous condition.
