Adapting your home

Tenants with disabilities or illnesses which make it difficult to use the present facilities can ask the council to carry out improvements and adaptations to suit their needs. If you need adaptations or improvements you should talk to Ascham Direct on 020 8496 4197. An occupational therapist may visit you to discuss your needs.
The type of work we may carry out depends on your need and includes:

  • installing handrails to make stairs easier
  • fitting a shower so you don’t have to climb in and out of a bath, or fitting a low bath
  • raising sockets to waist height
  • building ramps to doorways
  • installing stair lifts
  • widening doors for a wheelchair
  • painting the edges of steps so you are less likely to trip

Not all homes can be adapted. If it is not possible for you to stay in your home, we may arrange to transfer you.
