improves local area
Mr Kevin Fleisch, of Farm Cottages attended the Ascham Homes’
Residents Conference in October 2010 and entered a competition to
have the chance of winning improvement works to a street property
or estate.
Mr Fleisch’s entry was to have works carried out to a local
residential alleyway, to improve access for people with
disabilities and young families. The judges (Ascham Homes’ Resident
Board Members Annie Niner and Barry Coppock) were very impressed
with Mr Fleisch’s entry and judged him the winner.
Improving access
The project to the rear alley of Farm Cottages provides access
to five houses. Residents use of the alleyway was restricted due to
the varying ground levels, potholes and muddy surface. This caused
particular difficulties for resident Jackie who used the alley for
access of her mobility scooter which was housed in her back garden.
This resulted in Jackie being house bound on wet days due to the
bad condition of the path. Other residents struggled to pull out
wheelie bins on collection day and also restricted the use of
pushchairs. The alleyway was a bit of a dumping ground and the
fences and gate needed more than just a lick of paint.
The works
The works, co-funded in partnership with Topcoat Construction
and Kier Services - Maintenance, made the ground level with a
tarmac finish. This also required new levels and slopes to take
account of the main path and entrances to the houses. We introduced
a kerb to the path, shingle borders and painted the railing fence
and main gate.
The end result
Mr Fleisch, said: “I am really pleased that Ascham Homes have
acknowledged street properties. I give praise to the excellent
workers, who worked through the bitterly cold weather, with icicles
in their ears! Thank you to Ascham Homes for the work that
has been carried out.” Resident Jackie, said: “I am very thankful
to Kevin for entering this competition. Before this work was
completed it was very difficult for me to go out, the ground was
very muddy and full of potholes. I can now get into and out of my
property a lot easier. This has really made life so much better for
me.”

“We fully support Ascham Homes’ Annual Residents Conference and
feel that the event provides an opportunity for true engagement. It
is particularly rewarding for us as contractors to have ideas such
as the Farm Cottages project to come straight from the
resident. We look forward to this year’s Conference and hope
to be involved with similar initiatives.”
